About Acetal Sheet

Acetal sheets, also known as POM sheets, are made of high-quality polyformaldehyde plastic by the extrusion process. It offers excellent wear resistance and chemical resistance. The long operating temperature is from -40 °C to 90 °C. The density ranges from 1.41 to 1.5 g/cm3.

Normally, you can find Acetal Sheets with different grades, for example, Homopolymer, Copolymer, Food grade, FDA grade, Static Dissipative (ESD), PTFE-Filled, etc. The common colors are natural color, white, and black. Sometimes, custom colors are available, such as blue, yellow, red, green, grey, etc.

Acetal Sheets can be machined into the precision mechanical components, for example, gears, pulleys, rollers, bearings, housing parts, bushings, cams, valves, seals, gear wheels, and other parts with high stiffness, low friction, excellent dimensional stability, and low thermal expansion.

Normally, we stock the frequently-used acetal sheets, for example:

Delrin® is a brand of DuPont Company, normally, it is POM Homopolymer (POM-H).

Acetal or Polyoxymethylene (POM) has a wide range of applications. They are used in the automotive industry for trim parts. They are also used in boat accessories, bearing and bushing, pump, and valve parts.

Acetal is also used in wear parts, industrial parts, electronic component housing, mechanical gears, etc. We also manufacture medical products and sports equipment from POM.

POM plastic is very strong, durable, and has very good sliding properties. It also has excellent wear resistance and great dimensional stability. POM also absorbs very little water, which makes it good for water usage.

Compared to metal, POM has good design flexibility, high strength-to-weight ratio, and corrosion resistance.

POM Plastic has a high tensile strength of 9300 psi, which refers to very strong mechanical properties. This allows it to withstand very heavy loads without deformation.

It is highly impact-resistant and often considered as strong as metals. So, it is used alternatively to metal, where a lighter alternative is required.

Proper heat and pressure are applied to POM to mold it. Before that, POM resin is provided in granulated form.

However, extrusion, injection molding, compression molding, blow molding, or rotational molding are primarily used for POM. Injection molding and extrusion are the most used moldings.

Here are the basic characteristics of polyoxymethylene.

  • Strong, rigid, and tough.
  • Has good temperature resistance and can operate at around 90°C
  • Has very good chemical resistance.
  • Has good tensile strength but is easy to machine.
  • POM is creep- and fatigue-resistant.
  • POM has very good sliding properties, wear resistance, and water resistance features.

Acetal, Polyoxymethylene is naturally opaque white because of its high crystalline composition. So, nothing is seen through the POM sheet. It neither reflects nor emits light.

You will see this translucent thermoplastic polished or glossy finish. This is because of its rigidity and smooth surface texture.

Hydrolysis resistance means the ability to withstand heat and humidity or withstand hot water. The hydrolysis resistance of standard homopolymer POM and copolymer POM differs.

Homopolymer has a hydrolysis resistance of 60°C. On the other hand, copolymer has a hydrolysis resistance of 85°C.

POM-C means copolymer POM, and POM-H means homopolymer POM. These are two types of acetal.

The main difference between them is in their structure. Single monomer polymerization produces POM-H. It creates a regular crystalline molecular structure.

On the other hand, two different monomer polymerization techniques create POM-C. This results in a more amorphous structure.

The famous POM-H brand is Delrin@, and TECAFORM@ is a brand of POM-C.

The natural color of polyoxymethylene is opaque white. But you can dye it in many colors. The common colors they are dyed are usually black, green, blue, red, and yellow.
