About High-density Polyethylene (HDPE)

High-density polyethylene, short name is “HDPE”, is a thermoplastic polymer, made from petroleum, its density is greater or equal to 0.941 grams per cubic centimeter, the melting point is 130 °C (266°F), and the natural color is white. it is commonly recycled and has the number “2” as its resin identification code. As one of the well-known engineering plastics, HDPE offers high-impact strength, high chemical resistance, and very low water absorption. It can work well at temperatures ranging from 46°C (-50°F) to 82°C (180°F).

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic is highly processable and can be worked by cutting, bending, drilling, CNC milling, injection molding, riveting, turning, die cutting, welding, routing, etc. As one of the popular engineering plastics, High-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic is used frequently in wide applications, for example, HDPE cutting boards, food processing, marine products, sewage treatment, packaging, drain pipes, outdoor signage, and some plastic parts for automotive parts, etc.

As one of the leading suppliers of HDPE plastic in China, UVTECO stocks HDPE sheets in white/black and common sizes for fast delivery. In the meantime, we also provide machining services for global clients.

Frequently Asked Questions about High-density polyethylene (HDPE)

Yes, UVTECO can provide HDPE plastic parts, which is made by injection molding process, CNC machining, and extrusion process, etc.

Yes, high-density polyethylene is recyclable. You can recycle HDPE in all its forms and produce new products. It is also one of the most accepted recyclable plastics in the world.

HDPE degrades very little during processing. So, you can recycle the rejected plastics and then reprocess them to make brand-new products.

Yes, you can paint high-density polyethylene. But you have to choose the type of paint you want.

Experts recommend using exterior latex house paint or elastomeric paint for HDPE. These paints maintain HDPE’s elasticity and flexibility when they dry.

Otherwise, UVTECO can provide colored HDPE plastic.

Yes, HDPE is safe. It is FDA and NSF-approved and BPA-free. So, this is safe for humans and allowed as food-grade plastic.

Also, HDPE doesn’t release any harmful chemicals or fumes both when burnt and unburnt. You can use HDPE products safely, both indoors and outdoors.

HDPE is used in different industries for many purposes. They are used in the marine industry for boating floors, cabinetry, anti-skid surfaces, etc. It is also used for food cutting boards, outdoor signs, ice rinks, the shipbuilding industry, etc.

HDPE is also used in mining, semiconductor, agriculture, water treatment, and chemical processing industries.

For thin HDPE sheets, you can use a utility knife with a ruler. For thick sheets, a table saw, circular saw, chain saw, or jigsaw can be used.

But whatever saw you use, you have to use a proper saw blade. Don’t use saw blades with teeth more than 15mm apart from each other.

Yes, HDPE is UV-resistant. It is also all weather-resistant. However, prolonged exposure to sunlight can degrade HDPE, and it will lose its integrity against UV rays.

However, adding UV stabilizers during the manufacturing process can make HDPE more UV-resistant. This additive significantly improves HDPE’s UV resistance.

No, HDPE isn’t biodegradable. If you throw it into the environment, it will take hundreds of years to break down. Since HDPE isn’t biodegradable, it is recyclable.

For this characteristic, HDPE is one of the most popular plastics in the manufacturing industry.

Yes, you can bend HDPE sheets. You can use Calrods, air-circulated ovens, strip heaters, or radiant heaters to heat and bend this plastic.

You can also use a bending bar to bend HDPE sheets. However, HDPE sheets start to soften at 128°F (70°C). The temperature range can go up to 285°F (140°C) and 385°F(196°C) based on the thickness of the sheet.

You will get many advantages from using HDPE plastic. Some of the key advantages are:

  • Low cost
  • UV-resistant
  • Very strong with high impact strength
  • Flexible to machine and shape
  • Low moisture-absorption
  • Lightweight
  • Resistant to acids, alcohols, and odors.
  • Easy to bend and easy to weld
  • Available in multiple colors.

Yes, HDPE is scratch-resistant. Since it is highly impact-resistant and durable solid plastic, you can use it in harsh environments with a lot of pressure.

With its stability and strength, you can be relaxed and no longer have to worry about any exterior or interior damage.

The main difference between HDPE and polypropylene(PP) is in their thickness. HDPE is thicker and stronger than PP. Polypropylene is lightweight and has more thermal resistance.

So, HDPE is used in applications where more strength and impact resistance are required. On the other hand, PP is used in applications where heat resistance is more crucial.

HDPE is a low-cost maintenance product because it’s easy to clean and doesn’t require frequent care. It doesn’t need expensive cleaning products or regular painting for long-lasting durability.  Also, HDPE is one of the most recyclable plastics in the world. All these make it a low-cost maintenance product.

HDPE is the most environmentally stable among other plastics. It is much more durable. It also requires a little energy to manufacture and process.

HDPE is also a versatile plastic that can be formed into many shapes and sizes. HDPE is also cost-effective and durable. All these characteristics make HDPE so popular.

Several chemical solutions can dissolve HDPE. Here are some examples.

  • Decalin-cyclohexane: Mixing in a 2:1 ratio at a temperature of 120°C to 140°C.
  • Nitric acid: Mixing with HDPE in a ratio of 1:3.6 to 1:10.8.
  • Limonene, α-pinene, and p-cymene: These natural terpenes are also effective in melting HDPE.

Yes, HDPE is a green solution for the piping industry. This is because it is environmentally friendly. HDPE doesn’t release harmful chemicals into the environment. Unlike many other plastics, it also doesn’t degrade or add any microplastic substances to nature.
