About G10/FR-4 Glass Epoxy

G-10/FR-4 is a thermosetting industrial material, including glass fabric and electrical-grade epoxy resin. This material was developed in the 1950s and offers excellent characteristics, such as high strength and stiffness, low moisture absorption, low coefficient of thermal expansion, excellent electrical properties, and chemical resistance. These properties are maintained at room temperature and under humid or moist conditions.

FR4 has a UL flammability rating of 94 V-0, but G10 offers a lower grade. FR4 can be substituted for G10 in almost all applications, but G10 can’t be substituted for FR4 because they offer properties similar to flammability.

G10/FR4 is widely used as an insulator for electrical and electronic applications. It is also used for mechanical applications when outstanding strength, stiffness, and excellent creep resistance are required.

FR4 is a super-strong industrial material that is made from glass fabric and epoxy resin. It can effectively resist water, heat, and chemicals, and withstand harsh conditions. It also has excellent electrical properties, which make it perfect for use in circuit boards. The material, developed in the 1950s, is now an effective substitute for G10 in most uses.

Yes, FR4 is a high-grade plastic. It is a strong, high-pressure thermoset plastic that ensures good application strength. The plastic is very tough and doesn’t absorb water. It is mostly used as an electrical insulator and can handle electricity safely. It is also found in mechanical applications for its outstanding stiffness.

FR4 is used in many important ways due to its strong physical and chemical properties. You will mostly find it in circuit boards, which are essential for electronic devices. This thermoplastic is commonly used in machines and factories to handle stress and friction. It is even found in transformers to transfer energy safely. The plastic is also made into washers and screw terminal strips to protect electrical parts.

G10 is a strong, lightweight material used in many ways. It is used as an electrical insulator that prevents sparks in electrical equipment. The toughness makes it perfect for rifle stocks, knife handles, and other tools. In boats, G10 resists rust and protects parts like hulls and canopies. It is also found in power equipment, like transformers, for handling high voltage.

G10 fiberglass is super strong and tough! Its tensile strength is about 40,000 psi, which allows it to handle significant stress without breaking. The glass’s compressive strength is even higher, at 65,000 PSI. G10 is also flexible and highly chemical resistant, making it ideal for durable tools like knife handles and gun grips.

No, G10 does not melt. It is highly resistant to heat and is formed under high pressure and heat. It can withstand temperatures up to 284°F. Due to its high thermal stability, G10 is widely used in various applications, such as electrical insulation and machinery components that require high heat resistance.

G10 material is water-resistant but not completely waterproof. Due to its weave, it absorbs some water. The water penetration amount is very little, about 0.001 or less (0.1%) for a piece of G10. This little water can get inside or pass through G10, ensuring enough stability even in wet conditions.

The thickness of the epoxy varies depending on the application. Typically, epoxy coats are between 300 microns at the thinnest and 5 mm thick. If you need a thicker layer, it can go up to 1 cm and be used on floors or surfaces where extra protection is needed.

Yes, G10 is considered oil-resistant due to its epoxy resin composition. It can effectively withstand exposure to oils. Due to its high oil resistance capability, it is often seen used in boat engine rooms, where resistance to moisture and oil is a must.

No, epoxy is not completely waterproof but is a strong and durable barrier that resists water penetration. Due to its superior water resistance capability, it can protect materials from moisture-related issues. However, it can penetrate water if submerging it for a long time.

Normally, G10 is mainly found in its natural form in a light yellow and FR-4 is green.

However, they are black if it offers anti static function. Otherwise, their colors can be customized, for example grays, reds, black, blue, pink, orange, yellow, white, greens, or purple. The color of the G10 varies depending on the manufacturing process and the specific resin used in the application.

Yes, G10 is a UV-resistant material that can withstand extreme exposure to ultraviolet light without major degradation. That’s why you can use G10 in various outdoor applications where sunlight is present. However, long-term exposure to UV light may affect its physical properties.

The main difference between G10 and FR4 is their UL flammability rating. The UL flammability rating of FR4 is about 94 V-0, whereas the G10 offers a lower grade. That’s why FR4 can be used as a replaceable material for G10 in almost all applications, but G10 can’t be substituted for FR4 due to its lower flame resistance.

No, FR4 is not electrically conductive. However, it is a great electrical insulation that can effectively prevent short circuits in printed circuit boards. It ensures a stable, non-conductive base for mounting electronic parts and keeps electronic devices working well.

“FR” stands for “Flame Retardant,” which typically indicates it can withstand flame effectively. It meets the UL94V-0 standard, a test showing how plastic materials handle flames. That’s why you will find the 94V-0 code on all PCBs where FR-4 is used.
